Roger Clark is an American and Irish actor, most memorable for his role as Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2. Clark truly took the audience’s breath away as he brought our favorite outlaw to life, bringing an emotional sense to this very deep character, he showed a side to Arthur that allowed people to grow so attached and make the game more and more re-playable!
Today I had the incredible honour of getting to sit and chat to this wonderful actor about his career and what lies next for him.
Tell Me A Bit About Yourself
My name is Roger Clark, I’m an actor and producer. I was born in New Jersey to an Irish mother and Irish-American father. We emigrated to Ireland back near my mother’s home town in Co. Sligo when I was 12. I went to the University Glamorgan in Wales and began my acting career after graduating with a BA in Theatre, Media and Drama. I’ve been an actor for over 20 years now and have worked in over 40 countries. Mostly theatre, voice over/acting, film, performance capture and audiobook narration. I now live in New England with my wife and two children.
Was Acting Something You’ve Always Wanted To Do?
I’ve always enjoyed acting but growing up I always felt I was going to need to do a ‘proper’ job. When the time came to pick what I was going to study at University I figured you only live once and decided to pursue my passion. Wasn’t a clear and easy path but now in hindsight, I know I made the right choice.
How Has The Industry Changed Since You Started?
hmmm, with all the streaming and there being so much more channels and media than when I first started out I can certainly say that there is more work than when I started. But most of it pays less than what it used to. Film stars wouldn’t do telly, telly stars had a rate that they wouldn’t work for less than, extras were extras etc. Now its a free-for-all. Its much more competitive and the ‘star’ system in Hollywood is disintegrating, We’ve also seen performances in gaming explode.
Were You Into Westerns Before Stepping Into The Role Of Arthur Morgan?
Absolutely, My father introduced me to westerns. He liked John Wayne, I liked Clint Eastwood. He showed me some of the classics from John Ford and Howard Hawks, we also enjoyed Western’s ‘second’ wave of popularity with the arrival of Clint Eastwood and spaghetti westerns. Westerns have evolved alongside audience’s preferences and sophistication. John Wayne’s era was very black and white, good vs. evil. Eastwood’s films have much more of a moral ambiguity to them. Westerns are continually changing to suit the audiences preferences. Now we have them in gaming.
The Game Came Out Just Over 2 Years Ago and The Response is Still Oustanding, How Does That Make You Feel?
I’m very pleased that the hard work of my colleagues and I is still being enjoyed at the level it is. I’m very lucky to have been a part of it.
How Did It Feel Going Back To Dublin For DCC?
I hadn’t been back in Ireland for about 6 years so it was great to go back and bring my family. Dublin was as busy as ever! Very nice to meet some of the Irish fans of the game too.
What Advice Would You Give An Aspiring Actor?
I would say develop a thick skin and be tenacious. Work begets work and if you’re not getting the work you want. Create your own and get as many eyes as you can on it. There is no guarantee of success and your definition of it may change with time so it is always better to pursue the projects that appeal to you artistically. Look for fulfillment, not notoriety.
Have You Been Working On Anymore Audiobooks?
Sure have! Been fortunate enough to have kept busy with them them during the pandemic. You can find my own audiobooks on http://payhip.com/unbridledaudio The rest are all on http://audible.com. Almost a hundred titles now, there’s quite a range.
Would You Like To Do More Performance Capture Roles In The Future Or Does Your Heart Belong To Theatre?
Yes and yes. I love doing both and intend to carry on doing both.
After getting to know Roger as an actor and a human being, I wish him all the luck and success in his career and beyond. I look forward to see what he will bring to us Outlaws soon.
